President Ilham Aliyev and President Sadyr Japarov attended opening ceremony of restored Aghdam Juma Mosque

On April 25, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Japarov attended the opening ceremony of the Aghdam Juma Mosque following its restoration.

Anar Alakbarov, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, briefed the heads of state on the restoration details.

The restoration of the Aghdam Juma Mosque - part of a larger project to restore historical, cultural, and religious monuments in territories liberated from occupation - returned the mosque to its original appearance. The mosque was built between 1868 and 1870 by architect Karbalayi Safikhan Karabagi. During the city's occupation by Armenian armed forces, the mosque was set on fire and subjected to vandalism.

Restoration work began in March 2022 after the lands were liberated. Conservation and restoration were carried out by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, adhering to the mosque's original architectural style. The project was supported by PASHA Holding and involved local and international specialists, including Austria's Brugger&KO Restauratoren GmbH.

Austrian experts examined the mosque’s original construction materials used to ensure meticulous restoration. Ruins in the area were cleared and exploratory excavations were conducted, revealing the historical stone pavement at the mosque's entrance.

A stone fragment from the Aghdam Juma Mosque presented to National Leader Heydar Aliyev on May 9, 2000, during the occupation, is now displayed in the mosque.

The damaged plaster on the domes has been repaired, and the domes and vaults have been reinforced with lime water and lime paste. The wall cornice has been rebuilt and filled with appropriate natural stones. Inside the mosque, the stonework and entrance door have been restored, while the façade has been renovated to reflect its historical appearance.
