President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva viewed the ongoing restoration works at the Chol Gala Mosque in Shusha.
Anar Alakbarov, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, briefed the head of state and the First Lady on the restoration process. The project for the restoration of the Chol Gala Mosque, another historical monument in Shusha, is overseen by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and commenced in 2023 with support from PASHA Holding.
The Chol Gala Mosque was one of the 17 mosques operating in Shusha during the 19th century. It is located on Gasim Bey Zakir Street in the Chol Gala quarter, part of the upper sections of Shusha. This historic monument was constructed in the 19th century by Karbalayi Safikhan Garabaghi. The mosque is distinguished by its lack of a minaret and, like many mosques in Shusha, it features a rectangular design with the main entrance symmetrically located at the front.
The interior of the Chol Gala Mosque adheres to Islamic architectural principles with four octagonal stone columns, dividing the main prayer hall into three sections. A designated prayer area for women is provided opposite the mihrab within the main hall.
The Chol Gala Mosque was destroyed and looted by Armenians following the occupation of Shusha.
Adjacent to the mosque is the Chol Gala Spring, also dating back to the 19th century. The spring features rectangular walls built in a similar style to the nearby mosques. During the occupation, the spring was likewise destroyed, and its stone inscriptions were obliterated.
